For people at average risk, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends a screening mammogram every two years from age 40 through 74. Other organizations and clinicians may discuss different intervals. Your prior results, family history, personal history and preferences can change the plan. If you have a known high-risk condition or previous breast cancer, ask about a tailored screening schedule and whether a specialist should be involved. Bring the dates and location of previous mammograms if you can. If you received a letter about dense breast tissue or an abnormal result, share it with your clinician so the next step is based on the full report.
At RescueMD, we review screening needs during a well-woman visit or a separate appointment. When imaging is due, we can place an order for a mammogram at a qualified imaging facility. The facility performs the study and sends a report to the ordering clinician. Our team can explain the result and discuss whether further imaging or a breast specialist referral is recommended.
When you call, ask about the imaging facility, scheduling steps and your insurance or self-pay cost. Coverage and fees depend on the imaging provider and your plan. If the test is being ordered because of a new symptom, the type of imaging and coverage may differ from routine screening.
Do not wait for a routine screening slot if you find a new lump, nipple discharge, skin dimpling or another persistent change. Tell our team about the symptom when scheduling so a clinician can assess it promptly and decide whether diagnostic imaging or specialist care is needed. A normal prior mammogram does not rule out every new concern.
The imaging facility will give you preparation instructions for your mammogram. You may be asked for prior images so the radiologist can compare them. If the report requests additional views or an ultrasound, follow-up is part of completing the screening process; it does not by itself mean cancer has been found.
