Bring recent home measurements, your monitor if available and a list of medicines and supplements. A single reading may need repeat measurements or home monitoring before a diagnosis is made. At your appointment, your clinician reviews your readings, health history and possible contributors. They may recommend tests to assess related concerns, such as kidney function or blood sugar, according to your situation. Together you can discuss a treatment goal, how and when to measure at home, and the timing of follow-up.

Do not wait for a routine appointment if you have chest pain, severe shortness of breath, sudden weakness, trouble speaking or another possible emergency: call 911. If a home reading is over 180/120, wait at least one minute and check it again. If it remains that high and you have symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness, weakness or vision changes, call 911; if you have no such symptoms, contact a health professional promptly for guidance.
