A Pap test checks cervical cells for changes that could become cancer. An HPV test checks for certain types of human papillomavirus that can cause those changes. Depending on age, past results and medical history, your clinician may recommend a Pap test, an HPV test or both. Neither test is a substitute for testing for other sexually transmitted infections; see our STI testing page if you have that concern. The test generally involves a speculum exam and collecting a small sample from the cervix for a laboratory. Tell your clinician if you have had a total hysterectomy, previous abnormal results or treatment of cervical precancer, because that history can change the recommendation.
Most average-risk patients with normal results do not need a Pap test every year. The interval depends on age, the type of test and your history. For example, CDC guidance describes three years after a normal Pap test for many patients ages 21 to 29, and several screening options for ages 30 to 65 with intervals of three or five years after normal results. Higher-risk situations can require a different schedule.
You can still have a well-woman exam in a year when you are not due for cervical screening. A preventive visit is a broader review of your health, symptoms and other screening needs.
If you are scheduled for a Pap test, ask about any preparation. CDC advises avoiding intercourse, douching and vaginal medicines or spermicidal foam for two days before a Pap test when possible. If you have your period or had sex before the visit, you can still come in; tell the clinician so they can decide whether collection should proceed.
Ask how and when results will be sent. An abnormal or unclear result does not automatically mean cancer. The next step depends on the exact test result and your prior history; it may be repeat testing or a referral for colposcopy with a gynecology specialist. Follow-up matters even if you feel well.
If you have pelvic pain, unusual bleeding or discharge, tell us when scheduling. These symptoms may need a separate evaluation rather than a routine screening test alone.
