An IUD is placed inside the uterus. Hormonal and nonhormonal options have different effects on bleeding and different approved durations. Your clinician will review the method, your medical history and whether pregnancy can reasonably be excluded before placement. Ask which devices are available through the practice and what coverage or ordering steps apply. For a routine removal, a clinician typically uses the IUD strings. If strings are not visible or removal is difficult, additional evaluation or referral may be needed. If you want another IUD or a different method, discuss the timing so you understand whether backup contraception is needed.
Nexplanon is an implant placed under the skin of the upper arm. Local anesthetic is used for placement and removal. Your clinician will explain the procedure, bandage care, possible bruising and when to call about a concern. An implant that cannot be felt or is difficult to remove may need imaging or a clinician with additional procedural expertise.
If you want the implant removed because of side effects, a pregnancy plan or a change in preference, tell us what you would like to do next. We can discuss another method at the visit or arrange a birth control consultation before the procedure.
When you schedule, tell the team your current method, device type if known, insertion date, last menstrual period and whether you might be pregnant. Bring records from the original placement if you have them. We will tell you about any preparation and whether a separate counseling, testing or procedure appointment is needed. Same-day placement or replacement depends on medical appropriateness, device availability and scheduling.
Ask about discomfort and pain-control options before the procedure. Afterward, your clinician will explain expected symptoms, how long backup contraception is needed if relevant and warning signs such as fever, severe or worsening pain, heavy bleeding, or a concerning arm-site reaction. Follow the instructions given for your specific device and procedure.
IUDs and implants prevent pregnancy but do not protect against STIs. Ask about STI testing if you have symptoms or an exposure.
